In my day job I work for the UK campaign group Ethical Consumer.
Part of this work includes monitoring and cataloguing civil society criticisms of businesses around the world.
Ethical Consumer’s research catalogues problems business activities in four main areas:
- Environmental damage
- Human rights
- Animal welfare
- Political Activity
This tracking of business behaviour has been going on for more that 27 years now, and has helped develop one of the biggest databases of its kind – called corporate critic. Around ten new examples of problem behaviour are added to this database daily.
It is this background in the study of actual corporate behaviour which has led to this proposal to consider phasing out the for profit corporation in its entirety.
